What is a functional resume?
A functional resume (also called a skills-based resume) groups your experience under skill categories instead of listing it job by job. The goal is to foreground transferable strengths rather than a linear timeline.
When it can help
- Changing careers, where your title history does not match the target role
- Returning to work after a gap
- Early-career candidates with more project than job experience
The caution
Some recruiters distrust pure functional resumes because they can hide dates and context. A safer approach is a combination resume: a skills summary up top, followed by a brief reverse-chronological history. ResumeCue’s Pivot Career Change template uses this structure.
